Experimental streaming method on OS 5.0

Postby Gordon » Tue Mar 09, 2010 9:48 am

BBScanner supports an "experimental" streaming method which results in a much shorter buffering time. When the app is installed on phone's running OS 5.0 this streaming method is disabled by default due to compatibility problems I saw previously. It appears that the compatibility problems I saw previously may not exist anymore due to some changes I made a while back in how I build the different versions of the app.

If you're running OS version 5.0, can you try enabling the "experimental" streaming method and then report in here to let me know whether or not you had any problems? After enabling the setting you should listen to a scanner for at least 5 minutes to confirm everything is working fine.

You can enable the use of the "experimental" streaming method by selecting Settings, then Player Settings, then scroll down to the "Experimental" section and change "Use experimental streaming method?" to "Yes".

When reporting whether or not the new streaming method works for you it would be helpful if you could include the model of phone you're using and your OS version number.

This information will help me determine whether or not it is safe to make this new streaming method the default OS 5.0 installs.

Thanks,
Gordon

I'm running ver 4.5, on curve 8330. I had the regular method set, and it took an average of 70 seconds to get feed playing. With Experimental, I'm up and running in about 15 seconds after picking the feed.

The latest beta version (1.7.10.1), when run for the first time on a phone running OS 5.0, will change the streaming settings so that the experimental method is used instead of the "older" method (it won't mess with them if you change the settings back afterwards).

Problem reports, or lack of, from people using the new beta version on OS 5.0 will help me determine whether or not I should release this change in a non-beta version in the future.

I turned on Experimental on my BB Tour OS 5.0. It took 23 seconds to buffer up and it seems to be receiving just fine.
